Homemade Non-Toxic Dry Shampoo for Any Hair Color

This homemade non-toxic dry shampoo recipe is adjustable to match any hair color, works even better than store-bought dry shampoo, and is made from natural ingredients. It takes just a minute to make, and is the only dry shampoo recipe you’ll ever need!

Why Make Dry Shampoo at Home?

Store-bought dry shampoos contain harmful ingredients that are carcinogenic and known to wreak havoc on the endocrine system— like benzene, talc, and synthetic fragrances. Why buy store-bought dry shampoo that contains toxic ingredients, when you can make your own non-toxic version at home in under a minute?

My homemade dry shampoo recipe works incredibly— it soaks up excess oil, adds volume to your hair, and will make you forget why you even needed it in the first place! It uses natural ingredients that have no harmful side effects. So let me teach you how to make it!

Homemade Dry Shampoo for Any Hair Color

The base of this dry shampoo recipe is arrowroot powder. You can also use cornstarch, as it works just as well, but I find that arrowroot powder has a finer, silkier finish, making it the preferred option.

  • Blonde Hair- Stick to using only arrowroot powder as it will naturally settle and blend into your light hair.
  • Dirty Blonde- Add a touch of cacao powder to your arrowroot base for a slightly darker shade.
  • Red Hair- Use a blend of arrowroot powder and carob powder to achieve a light, orangey-brown hue.
  • Brunettes- Use a 1:1 ratio of arrowroot powder and cacao powder.
  • Black Hair- Use a 1:1 ratio of arrowroot powder and activated charcoal powder.

I’ve been using my homemade dry shampoo recipe for years now, and it works like a charm! I’m a brunette, so I use arrowroot powder and cacao powder— and the only side effect is smelling like a yummy chocolate bar!

How to Make Homemade Dry Shampoo

1. Combine arrowroot powder and coloring agent of choice in a mixing bowl.

2. Mix together with a spoon until well combined.

3. Transfer to a lidded jar or container, and store in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

How to Apply

To apply, dip a soft bristle brush into your homemade dry shampoo and apply the powder to your roots. Start by dabbing small amounts into 1-2 inch sections of your roots at a time.

Use your fingers to blend and evenly distribute the dry shampoo in your hair. Once your homemade dry shampoo is applied, you’re ready to style your hair however you please!

Since this is a dry shampoo powder, I like to place a towel around my neck to catch any powder that may fall during the application process!
